At just 24 years old, Angie Coleman was balancing marriage, motherhood, and financial uncertainty. She and her husband had been renting for years, raising their two little girls without much support after the passing of her parents. The dream of homeownership seemed out of reach, but Angie was determined to change that.
Working at First Title, she was familiar with NeighborWorks Waco and had seen firsthand how they helped families navigate the home-buying process. One day, she looked at her husband and said, “We can do this.” That decision set them on a journey that would change their lives.
Angie and her husband took NeighborWorks Waco’s free Homebuyer Education Course, where they learned about budgeting, credit, and the steps to purchasing a home. With guidance from NeighborWorks Waco, they secured down payment assistance, and, in 2004, they purchased their first home. It was more than just a house. It was stability, security, and a foundation for their growing family. While living in that home, they welcomed their son and built the financial confidence they had once lacked.
After eight years, they sold their first home and purchased another in 2012. As their family continued to grow, so did Angie’s career. From 2014 to 2022, she worked as a Mortgage Lender, helping other families achieve what she had once thought was impossible. Having personally experienced the support of NeighborWorks Waco, she often referred first-time homebuyers to their programs, knowing they would be in good hands. “I knew they were in good hands when I sent clients their way, and I knew they would be taken care of,” she said.
Angie believes homeownership is about more than just having a place to live. It is about building equity, creating wealth, and owning something that can be passed down to future generations. She understands the fears and uncertainties that come with buying a home for the first time, but she also knows that NeighborWorks Waco provides hope.
Her advice to first-time homebuyers is simple: don’t be afraid to ask questions and seek guidance. She encourages people to reach out to organizations like NeighborWorks Waco, especially if their credit is not where it needs to be, because help is available. She reminds potential homebuyers that renting does not have to be their only option, and that homeownership is an attainable goal with the right support.
For over three decades, NeighborWorks Waco has been empowering families like Angie’s to take that first step toward homeownership. Their mission is to provide education, resources, and financial assistance to make the dream of owning a home a reality. Angie Coleman is living proof that with determination and the right support, homeownership is not just a dream—it is a reality waiting to happen.
